What is Chernobylize?

The Chernobyl disaster in 1986 was one which had a massive impact on the world outside of the closed off Soviet Union. It came at a time when Mikhail Corbachev had embarked on the duel policies of Glasnost and Perestroika in a bid to modernise the USSR whilst maintaining the social state. Since the disaster, Gorbachev has claimed that it was the disaster at Chernobyl that brought about the greatest changes in the USSR.

"To what extent was the Chernobyl disaster, Glasnost and Perestroika the reason for the collapse of the Soviet Union."

Our aim is to inform the population about Chernobyl, Glasnost and Perestroika and to link it to the collapse of the Soviet Union. We will do that by giving a detailed description of Chernobyl, Glasnost and Perestroika in the following pages where comments from historians about limitations of evidence, videos, images and articles are included.

The official death toll from Chernobyl was 31, but the real figure was much higher. The refusal to make early public announcements delayed avacuation of the worst affected areas. The neighbouring town of Pripyat was not evacuated until the following day. The porblems continued until the middle of May. An investigation blamed the top managers of the plant, who were sentenced to hard labour for failing to observe safety procedures.
